Careers

Work where the answers get decided.

Surface builds an AI GEO employee: software that watches what ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews say about a brand, then does the work that changes those answers. The company is one founder, remote and pre-launch. Anything open is listed below in full, salary band included.

01 /How we work

A few non-negotiables.

These define the day to day. They are constraints picked on purpose, not compromises tolerated.

  1. Written by default

Decisions and their reasoning live in the repository, next to the thing they decided. A choice nobody wrote down gets relitigated every three weeks, and a small team cannot afford that.

  2. AI does the volume, people make the calls

Monitoring, scoring and research at scale run on the engines and the tooling. What ships, what it says, and whether it is honest stays with a person.

  3. Remote, and honest about it

We hire for the work, not the timezone. There is no office to come back to later and no plan to build one.

  4. Receipts over adjectives

Claims carry a before and an after or they do not ship. The product is built on that promise, so the company cannot run on a looser standard than the thing it sells.

02 /Open roles

What is open right now.

Roles appear here the day they open and leave the day they close. Each one states its scope, salary band and equity in full.

What Surface is

An AI GEO employee. It watches whether a brand is named when ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews answer the questions its buyers actually ask, proposes the work that would change those answers, does that work once approved, and comes back with the before and after. One founder, a Delaware C corporation, pre-launch.

What you would own

The engine. Five owned direct-provider collectors, the scoring and aggregation that turn raw answers into a position, the propose-and-draft loop, and the evaluation harness that decides whether a new prompt version is allowed to ship. You would be the first engineer, which means you also own the parts nobody has written yet: the worker that moves the engine out of the request cycle, the per-tenant memory, and the cost ceilings that keep a paid run from outliving its budget.

What we look for

You have shipped something that calls model APIs in anger and survived contact with rate limits, partial failures and a bill. You write TypeScript you would be willing to leave untouched for eighteen months. You treat an eval set as the thing that decides, and a benchmark you cannot reproduce as noise. You have opinions about when an agent should ask and when it should act.

What we do not look for

Someone who wants a spec handed down. Writing the spec is half the job.

The honest part

There is no revenue yet. The product ships publicly in September 2026. The equity is real and it is early, and early equity is usually worth nothing. Come because the problem is good.

Positioning, the words on this site, the launch, and the loop after it. You decide what Surface is called and what it is compared against. You write the comparison pages, the launch sequence and the founder-facing content, and you own the number that says whether any of it worked.

What we look for

You have positioned a technical product for a technical buyer and you can point at the copy. You write plainly and you cut your own best sentence when it earns nothing. You are comfortable being measured on pipeline rather than impressions. You can tell the difference between a claim we can prove and a claim that merely sounds good.

What we do not look for

Someone who needs a brand book, a content calendar and four approvers. None of that exists here, and building it is not the job.

The honest part

You would be the second person. Pre-launch, no marketing team, no budget to hide behind, and a founder who will argue with you about words. The variable pay is tied to pipeline you can actually influence, and we define it together before you sign.
